The Credential

The credential is the fundamental document for the pilgrim.
It represents the “pilgrim’s passport”, attests to the identity and motivation of the traveler. The pilgrim must have it with him to be identified as such and have access to the reception facilities provided along the route. In addition, it is necessary for agreements with catering activities or public transport services on the territory.

By handing over the credential in every place where the pilgrim is hosted, he will receive a stamp, useful for the completion of the path and necessary to request the “Testimonium” (you must have traveled at least the last 200km by bike or 100km on foot).

Many structures welcome pilgrims by requiring a simple offer to support the management costs. In the case of accommodation offering more services, reductions are generally applied. In some areas they have agreements with public transport.

The credential contains 64 punching boxes, more than enough for the 45 Italian stages.

These are the two fundamental objects for walkers travelling along the Via Francigena.
